Electronic Medication Management
Traditionally across Australian hospitals, most medications are prescribed on paper charts. As with any manual system, there is a likelihood of error in documentation and transference. In a hospital setting, this could lead to problems such as mismatched information, medication errors, omissions and miscommunication through handwritten notes.
The effort to reduce these errors will improve patient safety, optimise resource allocation and reduce system‑wide inefficiencies. For these reasons, Electronic Medication Management Systems (EMMS) are anticipated to pave the way forward. The 2015 budget affirms this movement as evidenced by an investment of $485 million into improving electronic health record systems.
The use of EMMS will facilitate speed and accuracy of information availability, transference and communication. This will have the additional benefit of liberating the time of nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals, such that their expertise could be better devoted to patient care.
At MIMS, we realise the needs of the healthcare community and are here to support the future of medication management. We are excited to support the transition to EMM by providing EMMS developers with logically structured and locally relevant medicines information. As such, we are moving towards creating more granular data sets in order to support different market needs. Our data also aligns with national Australian Medicine Terminology (AMT) which facilitates smooth transition into e‑Medicine.
At MIMS, we are constantly tuning in to the changing needs brought about by EMM and continually evolve to keep in step with market needs.
